The Alberta Civil Liberties Research Centre

Human Rights Education Project

The Human Rights Education Program teaches secondary students about human rights law, from the international level to the local level.  The program combines direct teaching of students as well as coaching and assisting teachers in the human rights field.  We create resource materials to assist teachers in teaching students about human rights issues.

Free Services Provided by the Human Rights Educators and/or the Research Centre

  • Student & teacher materials on human rights and civil liberties issues – available free online as a pdf, or as hard copy for purchase
  • Professional development for teachers and administrators on human rights education
  • Free classroom presentations on various human rights and civil liberties issues – see workshops list.
  • Human rights education library (with circulating materials and video preview facilities)

We can customize a presentation for staff or students at your school.  We can also create a presentation on a topic of your choice.

The Staff

Our Educators are Pamela Dos Ramos and Ayodeji N. Otiti. Pamela is responsible for Southern Alberta and Ayodeji for Northern Alberta. Martha McManus rounds out our team, mostly concentrating in Calgary and Southern Alberta. The Human Rights Educators are not only available to schools but also will do education sessions for teachers about human rights through presentations at teachers’ conventions, in-service training, and professional development, and through participation in teachers’ groups and networks.
